Summary

Running with a 996 GT3 as the target, but dropped in the high-speed sections. Personal view that the 964 RS is more stable at speed on 18-inch wheels than on 17-inch. Adds a reply to comments about the kit worn (short sleeves, no gloves).

Original description — as written at the time

This is from a Porsche driving school run by Porsche Club Essen. A Porsche 996 GT3, a Porsche 993, a Porsche Boxster and others appear in the video. I run with the 996 GT3 as my target, but it inches away and at the end it is gone in an instant. This is only my own impression, but the stability of the 996 GT3 in fast corners is superb. That stability must be what backs the driver up to get on the throttle even harder. In the fast section from the town of Adenau (the bridge part) onwards the brilliance of the 996 GT3 comes out. To comment on the 964 RS, going from 17-inch wheels to 18-inch increases high-speed stability and makes it much easier to drive at the Nürburgring, I think. That is my impression from running on 18s too. I have not tested it, but at places like Suzuka the 18s might be quicker. If anyone has tried it, I would be glad of a comment. On picture quality, it has been converted from Hi8 to standard MPEG then to WMV, so it is a bit rough. / On a certain message board I was told that, given I am running in short sleeves, without gloves and without a helmet, and given my poor posture and eye line, I should go back and start again with the classroom theory. What was pointed out is very much something to reflect on, so let me explain about the videos on this site as a whole. At track days abroad there was no obligation to wear those three things. When they are not being worn at a circuit abroad, it is as a rule a driving school. For races I do wear them. There may be several videos at Japanese circuits with short sleeves or no gloves. Please see that as a bad habit. I am sure many people feel the risk just as was pointed out. These days I basically run with all three. I only have something like 30-50 hours of running at the Nürburgring, so the lines are no reference. There are specialist books on the Nürburgring, so use those for the lines. The 964 RS M003 has a cloth bucket seat so my body stays relatively stable, but the Nürburgring is frightening, so my body movements are no reference either. One more addition: the 964 RS has a leather bucket seat, so even with a 5-point harness done up the body tends to slide over at an angle, so in the 964 RS the body movement shows up clearly, and on that point too please do not use me as a reference.
