A lap close to the day's best (1:38.592). Also sets out how the times moved with each setup change and compares A048 MH with PS Cup.
This lap is 1:38:592 Anti-roll bar F2/5 R2/3, tyre pressure F2.0 R2.2 Ride height at the lowest it goes on standard settings, front and rear A few thoughts on the Advan 048 MH and the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup Sportsland SUGO 8/10, temperature around 20 degrees, Sport Cup 1:36:9 10/19, temperature around 15 degrees, 048 MH 1:38:5 The result turned out astonishing. Going by the conditions, the 048 MH should have set the better time by a mile, temperature included・・・・ The other difference in conditions is Pilot Sport Cup: 205/50/17 Advan 048 MH : 225/45/17 Generally people say the 048 MH grips more, and I too thought the 048 would be quicker. On controllability, first is the 048 MH second is the Pirelli Corsa third is the Pilot Sport Cup My personal view on the feeling of grip is the same. Since the front went to 225, I expected big oversteer at the final corner and elsewhere, so to get the time down I ran while making the changes below At first Anti-roll bar: F3/5 R2/3, tyre pressure 2.3 bar front and rear Best time 1:40:381 Change Anti-roll bar: F4/5 R2/3, tyre pressure 2.3 bar front and rear Best time 1:41:130 Change again Anti-roll bar: F2/5 R2/3, tyre pressure 2.3 bar front and rear Comparing the A048 with the Pilot Sport Cup, the A048's lateral stiffness is overwhelmingly higher, so with no flex it is harder to turn - that was the advice I got from a mechanic Change again Anti-roll bar F2/5 R2/3, tyre pressure front 2.0 rear 2.2 Best time 1:38:531 Second time 1:38:592 Even so it still felt odd, so I raised the rear ride height by 3 turns Time 1:39:388 / ・・・・・αβοοη..._〆(゚▽゚*) I chased down all sorts of causes, but the win on time went to the Michelin. / While the tyres were being swapped over ahead of Fuji Speedway the next day, the tyre shop (at SUGO) said: SUGO and Fuji have the highest surface grip (μ) in Japan right now, I reckon! Your tyres wear like mad, don't they! In fact, out of a 10-hour running window, about 5 hours of actual running and the A048 went to heaven! So here is a hypothesis. In general, the circuits where the A048 sets good times have low surface grip (μ)! On Okayama (TI Circuit Aida), a professional driver commented as follows. 2002 AUTOBACS JGTC joint test, Round 1, Okayama (TI Circuit Aida) (16, 17 March) No.16 Mugen NSX (GT500 / 2nd overall on day 1, 1st in the morning) A professional driver: "The balance of the car is not good at all, so it was almost unexpected that we set the top time in the morning. We have been running at high-grip tracks like Suzuka, and the surface grip (μ) here is low, so I think that is why the balance is not there." Twin Ring Motegi, Fuji Speedway, Sportsland SUGO and Suzuka must all definitely have high surface grip (μ), so at those sorts of circuits maybe the Michelin actually sets the better time? Note! I got a comment. The comment says the result might be different if I went to the M compound. The A048 would probably be faster. Then there is durability: the MH does 100 laps, so how long would the M last? It comes down to a choice made on economic sense. At other circuits the 048 definitely sets the better time. It is only a hypothesis, so it needs verifying・・・・ To verify it you need two sets of wheels and two sets of tyres, so I cannot do it on my own? Would anyone care to help? It has to be a Porsche 964 RS owner, though. On money the Michelin obviously lasts, so Michelin it is, but the controllability and grip feel of the A048 are irresistible. oO(・・・・・・) From next time it is winter, so the A048 would be the theory, but money is tight this time so Michelin for me・・・・

| Porsche 964 Carrera RS | 1:39.440 | ADVAN A048 MH 225/45/17 | 1:48 | First run on A048 MH at Sportsland SUGO. Against 1:36.9 on Michelin PS Cup on 8/10 (around 20 degrees), only 1:38.5 came in the better conditions of around 15 degrees — an unexpected result. Anti-roll bar, tyre pressure and ride height were varied through the session, leading to the hypothesis that Michelin is faster on circuits with high surface grip (μ); Fuji Speedway follows on 10/20. |
