SURVEY / 2026-08-09
Onboard footage from the early 2000s does not come up in search
I set out to confirm whether this collection is rare, and failed. The reason for the failure was far more important.
It records layouts that are gone — that, I thought at first, is the value of this collection. I decided to check from the outside whether it was true.
The conclusion first
This survey could not establish rarity. It is not a failure, though, because something more important came out of it.
As a control I used the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Public tourist driving has been possible there for decades, and it should have more amateur onboard footage than any circuit in the world. Searched by the same method, the number of amateur onboard videos that can be identified as filmed between 2000 and 2006 was zero.
So the zeros for the other five circuits show the limits of the method, not the rarity of the subject. Being able to make that distinction became the main result of this survey.
What was done
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Execution | Six researchers working in parallel (five subjects plus one control) |
| Means | Web search engines and page retrieval only |
| Search languages | English, German, French, Italian, Japanese |
| Total searches | approx. 110 |
| Definition of a comparable | (1) filmed before the relevant rebuild (2) amateur or club origin (3) video (4) currently accessible |
Results
| Subject | Comparables (onboard) | Candidates of unknown date | Excluded (professional / official) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paul Ricard (before the rebuild) | 0 | 1 | 4 |
| A1-Ring (1996–2003) | 0 | 0 | 9+ |
| Misano (anti-clockwise era) | 0 | 4 | 6 |
| Nürburgring GP (before 2002) | 0 | 0 | 3 |
| Old Fuji Speedway (before 2003) | 0 | 0 | 7 |
| Control: Nordschleife (2000–2006) | 0 | 5–7 | 20+ |
Why nothing turns up
- YouTube does not hold a filming date. Only an upload date. Footage from the early 2000s was uploaded years later, so narrowing by period is impossible in principle
- Putting the year into the search terms does not work. “2004” matches a car’s model year, a game’s title year and an F1 season. I confirmed a false positive where “Porsche 996.2 GT3 2004” turned out to be a session from 2024
- Search engines favour what is new. Even with “old footage”, “VHS”, “camcorder”, “alte Aufnahme” spelled out, edited videos from 2022–2026 come back
- There is a break on the community side too. The largest English-language source on the Nürburgring declares itself “since 2007”, and the largest German-language forum thread began in 2013. 2000 to 2006 falls outside the current community base
- The distribution formats of the time are gone. YouTube opened in February 2005. Before that it was mainly .mpg / .avi files on personal sites and links on forums, and most of those have disappeared
- One major outlet’s “15 best Nürburgring onboards of all time” went from 1987 straight to 2007. The early 2000s are a complete blank
What can be said / what cannot
What can be said
- By the means of ordinary web search, early-2000s amateur onboard footage cannot be reached, neither for the subject circuits nor for the control
- This is a structural problem of the web as a whole and has nothing to do with the rarity of any particular circuit
- Put the other way round, footage from this period has become systematically invisible to the current search infrastructure
What cannot be said
- “Footage of the subject circuits is rare” — with the control at zero, this cannot be claimed
- “It is common material” — equally, this cannot be claimed
The place of this site has changed
The claim of rarity has weakened. But the need for preservation and for metadata has, if anything, grown stronger.
If footage from the early 2000s has systematically vanished from search, then this collection must be invisible for the same reason. In that case the work of preparing English and German metadata can be recast not as a way of claiming rarity but as a way of breaking through that structural invisibility case by case. That has more practical, more certain value than proof.
That is the reason this site is built in four languages.
Routes not yet covered
- YouTube upload-date filtering (searches limited to 2006–2012). Amateur uploads of the time tend to have upload dates close to the year of filming, so this looks the most promising
- Internet Archive / Wayback Machine — effectively unexamined, because of API failures and 403 blocks
- Niconico — the centre of Japan’s onboard video culture in the late 2000s
- Archived logs of membership forums — all shielded from search engines
- WARP at the National Diet Library (Japan’s web archive)
The methodological lesson
Do not read “could not be found” as “does not exist” or “is rare”. It was only because a control was in place that this error could be avoided. A rarity survey without a control risks mistaking the limits of the method for a property of the subject.
